with the pandemic, MORE THAN EVER, people have increased their reliance on food delivery services SUCH AS DoorDash, GrubHub, Postmates, etc. It seems to be an unavoidable tradeoff: if we want to support our local restaurants, we have to accept that we'll end up with single-use food containers as trash.DELIVER ZERO MIGHT BE THE SOLUTION TO INDULGE, SUPPORT, WHILE KEEPING SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND.

I have been wondering for a long time, why can't there be a food delivery service that uses reusable food containers that they then collect to get professionally cleaned and sanitized before reusing again?

Let me introduce Deliver Zero! They started in NYC, though I have hopes that either entrepreneurs in other cities will emulate this model, or Deliver Zero will keep expanding as they go.

New Yorkers throw away almost a billion takeout containers every year.

DeliverZero was founded by Adam Farbiarz, Lauren Sweeney, and Byron Sorrells.

“Manufacturing, shipping, and disposing of the 1 billion takeout containers we throw away each year contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, a major factor in climate change. And then the containers—used once and for mere seconds—sit in landfills as far as 400 miles away from NYC. Here’s the thing: as busy New Yorkers, we really don’t want to stop ordering takeout. For many of us, it would be a significant lifestyle change. A few of us have never turned our ovens on.

So we came up with a solution.

It’s as easy as ordering through those other food delivery platforms. The difference? Your food arrives in reusable containers. Return the containers to the delivery person next time you order from any restaurant on the platform, or drop them off at any restaurant we work with. Yeah, it’s that simple.”

PICK A RESTAURANT AND ORDER FOR DELIVERY OR PICK UP

2.

YOUR FOOD COMES IN REUSABLE CONTAINERS

The containers are made out of sturdy, highly durable polypropylene (plastic). They can be used to reheat food in the microwave, are dishwasher-safe, and can hold very hot liquids; and they are 100% BPA free. The containers typically last well over 1,000 uses (we retire a container if it chips or breaks). After that, they are recycled

3. RETURN THE CONTAINERS WITHIN 6 WEEKS

You can return to the delivery person the next time you order from DeliverZero. Or drop them off at any restaurant on our platform.

If you want, you can keep the containers; we charge $3.25 plus tax for each container you keep.
